How make this forum active?
« on: April 01, 2015, 03:28:00 PM »
Hello everybody,

This forum is pretty new and there aren't many members. How can we keep things going?

Is there something we can do here that can't be found on other forums? How about mixing/mastering each others music and try to learn from each other, for instance?

Any other ideas?

Dirk

Hey Manducator,

Firstly, I am glad you care so much about the forum, thank you very much :)

Secondly, I suppose what needs to be done to make the forum/blog more known, thus
help more people, is that I need to spend/invest money on ads.

For now, I am relying solely on youtube (people can find the channel and the blog through related videos),
but you're right i need to take action with some paid ads.

I am going to create a donations page today on patreon and let everyone know about it.
I will also make it accessible to anyone (donations could start from $1).

Money would be used for the site's expenses (servers, backups, etc), plus for ads to make this site known to
as many home recording enthusiasts as possible.

Now that I think of it, it would be a great idea to create some contests too.
Audio gear - analog or digital - will be the main prizes.

I will update this thread really soon with details,
thanks manducator again for your concern and support.

That's a good idea - competitions would be a great way too. You could use social media to hype it up, have some kind of music prizes or like maybe a gift card to one of the online music stores (zzounds, ams, etc?), and have ppl vote for the best track or something...? use the poll feature to simplify the voting, set a deadline for entries and for voting, and then advertise it on facebook and other music forums - get a bunch of new members initially, and then hopefully some would stick around

I am posting on social media too, especially on facebook.

Unfortunately facebook has become greedy nowadays, people like the pages to get updates,
but facebook asks for money in order to actually appear to their homepage! That's outrageous!

That's why I am using email subscriptions now, that way I know that my subscribers would actually get the content
they'd subscribed for :)

I don't know, to be honest. Let's be realistic, how many people are prepared to pay monthly for being part of a forum? I know you offer tutorials, but youtube is tough competition... Just being honest.

No that's not for being a part of a forum.

I think you misunderstood this one..
That's purely a donation page, blog lessons and forum registrations will always remain free no matter what.

If someone wants to support the page and/or take part into competitions
then he can do it, but that's 100% optional.

I started this site with a vision for the lessons to be accessible to everybody,
I am not going to spoil this vision now... or ever. :)

I used to be an admin for a hip-hop forum about 3 years ago and it lasted for quite a while. It was mostly designed for hip-hop news and battling however one of the best ways to make a forum active is spreading the word so others know about it. There are plenty of websites with artists such as soundcloud and reverbnation, I'm sure some of those artists may be interested in checking the forum out for more information that could potentially help them improve however to keep people around you may want to add a little color to the site so it's not always plain text. Little things like the idea of contests are great ways to get everybody involved as well whether there's a prize or not, it can just be something to get credit for.

I also think that the news section could be a bit less narrow, or maybe have more sections for each type of genre. Things that occur in the media can also bring attention to people.

Should I look for an internal forum chatbox? Or something else?

I was meaning that we just start filling the boards. When I found you'r tips and signed up, and then signed up here i was stoked to find a forum that was new and not filled yet. A blank slate.

that's why I just started filling up some space to promote conversation.

I read the board forum titles and start thinking about what I've read or learnt to start a new thread.
