How difficult is it to learn to play a guitar?
« on: April 30, 2015, 01:44:14 AM »
I learned plenty as far as reading notes and such however it still came across as confusing to me when I looked at how the guitar functions as far as notes as such. How hard is it to learn to play a guitar as I am interested in potentially learning on my own, and how long would it take me before I can actually play a full legit song?

It depends on the song really.

If you're going for an easy song with 4-5 chords,
then just learn the chords one by one and then play them with the rhythm of the song.

If it's a metal song you're trying to play then you might need more practice, but still a song can be played in a week or less.

Orchestration though needs more time, but start from the basics, master them and then everything will be easier in the end :)

I'll first need a guitar, I'm just concerned about investing in one or not. What's the main purpose for using guitar picks vs fingers by the way? I've heard that it's to help with accuracy but I've found it easier to use my fingers on the strings instead.

Hi Paradox, Firstly what type of tones are you after? It may make a guitar choice a touch easier to narrow down?

Pick or not to pick!! Again what kind of style are you after?

I'm into metal so for the first 20 years I went pick! now that I play more accoustic guitar than ever, I put the pick down. It took a while to get fluent in all fingers but now I really dig the "being at one" with my guitar.

The best bit...No worries about loosing/forgetting Picks!

If you use a pick, make sure you learn alternate picking, one note pick down, next up etc.

I learnt that in a few hours, years ago when I learnt music we had a test, the 1st guy came out of his music test and told the rest of us we had to alternate pick... I learnt it before I had my test.

I know this is old but...

My approach to teaching guitar is progressive; first start with the bass or low E string, then have the student play along with their favorite songs just with the bass line. Just moving along the fretboard gives you all the notes you need.

Then, add the A string (the one below the E), skipping a fret, forming a power chord. Then add the D string, note right below where the A string finger is.

Then add another finger on the G string (below the D), where you press on this string determines if the chord is Major or Minor.

So, depending on how comfortable the student is, we progress accordingly. Adding complexity every time.

That's how I learned. And I find it more fun because you immediately play to your favorite songs.

Best of luck!
